CBD & Pets

Pet Dosing

When dosing a pet for the first time with CBD we always recommend starting with a low dose and working your way up. Most veterinarians recommend that pet owners start with a base dosage of 1 mg per 10 lbs.

Ex:

120 lb dog = 12 mg CBD

For smaller animals like teacup dogs, birds, reptiles, small rodents, ect. Dose them by 1 individual drop of a lower strength CBD oil (500 mg or less) Increase by 1 drop as needed.

Always give your pet about 3-7 days of the starting dose before increasing dosage and monitor their behavior. After 3-7 days of monitoring them on their starting dose you may increase their CBD dosage by 1-2 mg as necessary.

Dosing With A Tincture

Put the oil directly in your pet’s mouth, on top of their food, or on a treat. Animals have excellent absorption in their mouths and do not need to hold the oil under their tongue like humans. Tinctures have a duration of 6-8 hours and kick in about 15 minutes, 30 minutes for full effects. Animals experiencing seizures are recommended to use tinctures for a fast acting absorption. If the animal is having a seizure and you are unable to squirt the oil into their mouth you can try rubbing the oil on their gums. For arthritic animals or animals needing all day pain management two doses during the day are recommended.  One dose in the morning and a second dose around the afternoon time.

Dosing with a CBD Treat

We carry both cat and dog treats in 1mg, 3 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg increments. Our 1 mg treats are catnip flavored for cats as cats are so small and need very tiny doses. For smaller dogs 5 mg or less treats should be sufficient. Dog treats take a little longer to kick in than oils. Allow about 1 hour of time to pass before you begin to evaluate how effective the dose seems to be. Treats have a duration of 8 up to 12 hours.

*If your animal seems drowsy, scale back the dose. A side effect of too much CBD can be drowsiness.
